Theater Critique of Woyzeck

“Woyzeck”, a German play about a soldier who is tortured by both army and medical authorities.  It is not until his wife cheats on him that he can’t take any more and out of outrage, kills her.  It is a play that the playwright wrote to be performed as an expressionistic piece.

The CSUN production of this play followed very closely the way Georg Buchner meant for this play to be performed and with the exception of a few places where it was a little too extreme, I think the production was done very well.

The director used quite a few expressionistic skills to add to the play.  This includes white easels which were rolled in and out of the stage and used for a number of different effects.  One of those effects was shadows which were cast both from the front and through the back, which allowed the audience to see an alternative view of the play.  Also the director chose to display images and handwriting on the easels to set the audience and the actors into the setting.  Finally one of the last expressionist skills that the director chose to incorporate into the play was the movement of the easels in a clockwise turning to symbolize two different things at two different times.  The first was to symbolize time with gears displayed on the easels and floor and the second was to symbolize a cleansing with water drops to show that Woyzeck and Marie were in the water.

For the most part, the play was very believable and the audience felt connected but there were a few times when I had to question what was happening, for example when the characters would start collapsing.  Even now, I am still not entirely sure what the significance of the falling was.

In terms of the world of the play, Woyzeck does attempt to create a pre World War 1 or 2 historical context.  The actor who played the captain at least in this production seemed to resemble a dictator like “Adolph Hitler” especially down to his lines about, if I’m not wrong, getting rid of Jews.  Also the social class of Franz Woyzeck and his wife played very much into the respect that they got.

One other thing, I would like to add with regards Marie and I don’t know if this was a director’s decision or if the playwright meant this but Marie at least in the production, took after the biblical character of Mary Magdalene in that she even goes as far as to quote directly from the bible.  I thought this was especially interesting and would say almost certainly that this was a decision of the director because of the Westernized society that it was performed in.

Looking at Franz Woyzeck and his role in his community, he measured up with another character in the production and that was the black worker/slave, who by the way also depicted a similar character as the one from the movie “Show Boat”, especially when he broke out in song several times.  This is probably another decision of the director, maybe even because the film “Show Boat”.  It was this depiction of Woyzeck as a slave/worker that was tortured which made the audience empathize with him throughout the play, even when he murdered his own wife.  The treatment of him that drew to his madness made us want everything to get better for him.

Overall, the production was very pleasant to watch.  It was a serious play with several comedic sections, music that set the mood of each scene and the rhythmic movement of the actors on stage to confuse and make us think about what’s going on.

Tale of Two Cats

Once there lived two cats, one was a beautiful tri-color princess and the other a Siamese, ragdoll prince. The two lived together in a bickering rivalry. You see, it was who owned them that they bickered over. The princess belonged to the daughter where the prince belonged to the mother and whenever the prince thought the princess got to close to his owner, he would get into a pouncing position and chase her away.

One day, the prince and princess were in their regular positions on the high tower when the princess saw something. Immediately, she jumped down and stalked the cabinet underneath the counter, for what she’d seen was a mouse. Now the prince at this moment was sleeping but in a few minutes when he woke up, he saw the princess and he got suspictious. “What was she doing?” the prince thought.

All of sudden, the princess moved from her stalking position and pounced on an unexpecting mouse. She killed it after a few minutes and dropped it in front of her master’s room.

When her master’s father got home and saw it, he praised the princess and gave her two treats.

Now this made the prince mad and he vowed to get even with her, for she had taken his treat away when she caught that little mouse and she was not going to do it again.

Jewish Princess: Part 2

Now I bet you’re all wondering what happened to Claudia and that dashing young man. Well they did finally get married and in fact they did come back to the same neighborhood to raise their family. But no one knew about them. They stayed hidden so Josephia wouldn’t know. However, once in a while a young woman with hair of gold could be seen in the upstairs window gazing down at her old friend’s house, for Claudia and Josephia had been close. It was only after Dusty came into their lives that things broke up.

Claudia vowed one day that she would go back though. The only question was “When?” and “How?”.

One day, as Claudia was sitting upstairs as usual, she saw Josephia and her heart jumped, for Josephia was no longer acting like a princess. Instead she was serving others. Claudia couldn’t be leave it. How could this have happened? Was it because of her that Josephia had suddenly changed?

It was in that moment that Claudia decided that it was time, so she quickly got dressed in a pair of jeans and faded T-shirt and left the safety of her house to find Josephia. When she found Josephia, it wasn’t pretty for Josephia was on her front porch, crying.

At that moment Claudia couldn’t contain herself. She immediately ran over to Josephia and embraced her saying, “Oh Josephia, I’ve missed you so much. What’s happened to you?”

Josephia looked up from her lap, puzzled for a minute at who this strange lady was.

Claudia, noticing that Josephia didn’t recognize her, said, “It’s me, Claudia”.

At that instant, Josephia said, “What are you doing here. All you did was take a man away from me and leave me heartbroken. You are not my friend anymore. Get out of here!”

Claudia couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She said, calmly, “You have plenty of men. Why can’t anyone else be as happy as you? Besides, Dusty never loved you. He loves me.”

“That’s a big lie.” screamed Josephia, “Of course he loved me. Everyone loves me. You stole him and if you don’t get of my property in five minutes, I’ll have you arrested.”

“I can’t believe what I’m hearing.” cried Claudia, “We used to be so close before this happened. I’ll leave but if you ever want to forgive and forget, here’s my phone number, Call me!” With that said, Claudia left, leaving Josephia speechless.

Tales of the Jewish Princess

Once upon a time in a land far faraway, known as Chicago, there lived a beautiful but powerful princess, a Jewish princess, one who got her way no matter what. Her name was Josephia and she was the most spoiled, stuck up person who ever reigned. All of her friends were her slaves and all of her affairs, turned into her husbands. She was like a queen bee. She didn’t let her friends get close to anyone, especially men.

One day, Josephia was sitting on the third story of her mansion glaring down at her slaves when she noticed a new man talking to her best friend, Claudia. Oh, was he the most handsome she had laid eyes on, but why was he talking to that scamp? Josephia immediately summoned this charming man into her presence, however he wasn’t at all taken by her beauty. Rather he lingered after the presence of “Claudia”.

Well, this infereriated Josephia and in so made Claudia’s life tremendous. She gave her ten piles of clothes to wash daily and eighteen sets of dishes to wash hourly, but still Claudia made time for that charming young man.

It got so bad though that Claudia finally ran away with that young man and no one ever saw them again. Josephia’s friends say that they ran off to Vegas, got married finally, and are living just down the street from Josephia watching to make sure that Josephia doesn’t try to steal another man, but that’s just one tale.

Tales from another World

It was 3:16 and the school kids had just departed from school. It was a normal day, jumping rope, playing hopscotch, except for one thing, a strange young boy was here at school running around with all the other children. No one had ever seen him before and this puzzled the parents when they came to pick up their kids.

He was three foot just like the other children but his clothes were trash bags and he was just staying in the school yard, running around the track as if he was running a marathon. The coach, Mr. Liberty kept an eye on him and counted 350 laps before he finally stopped two hours later.

At 5:00, when the little boy finally stopped, Mr. Liberty decided to go over and find out when, his parents would pick him up. Just as he got within five feet of the little boy, a space shuttle appeared and beamed the little boy up.

Mr. Liberty was so stunned at what had happened that he in fact fainted were he was and it was not until 5:00 of the next morning that the principal found Mr. Liberty dead on the lawn.

As for the little boy in the garbage bag, no one ever saw him again, however there is a rumor of on a dark, cold night, a little boy running 350 laps around the track before disappearing again.

But that only a rumor.

STORYTIME

ATTACKS FROM THE COMPUTER WORLD

Once there was a girl who had a computer, but every time she would try something new, her computer would give her a hard time. Finally one day, she encountered an interesting folder on her C drive. Upon opening it, she was suddenly and unexplainably sucked into another world, the world of computers.

As she got up and began walking around, she noticed all of her old, out of date programs laying around in this other world. All of sudden, the programs started chanting, “Out of Date” “Gotta get Brand New”. It was as if the computer was rebelling against because every six months, she installed a new program into her computer.

Then it hit her,she was installing to many programs and forgeting about the older ones. I mean look at photo shop and photo max, they are both practically to same. The moment she released that, she immediately woke up from the floor of her room where she had landed and began getting rid of all of her new programs that she had resently put into her computer.

And she learned a very valuable lesson. Never under estimate the power of the old for if you do, they will surely turn on you. That goes for both people as well as possessions.

Frustrating!!!

AHHHH!

Boy this is frustrating but I think I finally figured this out. I love computers but man I hate when they don’t work the way you want them to. In fact this would be a good story. Here we go…
