Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted from opposite sides of the United States as the 78th Annual Golden Globes on February 28th, 2021 which aired live on NBC. Fey was at the Rainbow Room in New York and Poehler was in Hollywood at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and the audience this year was made up of first responders and essential workers in both locations who have been tested and vaccined for Covid-19.
All awards were determined by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and the entire program is currently streaming on Hulu with an active subscription.
- The first presenter was last year’s winner Laura Dern, who presented best supporting actor in a role to Daniel Kaluuya for his role in “Judas and the Black Messiah”. Through technology, he accepted virtually at home.
- Angela Bassett was the next presenter as she awarded best actor in a supporting role for TV to John Boyega for “Small Axe” as he too accepted safely from home.
- Colin Farrell talked about the first nominated film, “The Father” before the trailer was shown for all.
- Christian Slater presented best actress in a comedy or musical for TV to Catherine O’hara for “Schitt’s Creek” of which she also accepted virtually from home. Slater also also promoted Feed America which HFPA is promoting all night for donations for the organization.
- Tiffany Haddish presented next for best animated motion picture as “Soul” took this award and the director’s virtually accepted this award.
- Yahya Abdul Mateen II gave a brief synopsis of the next film nominated, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” as the trailer played for all.
- The President and chairs of the HFPA, Helen Hoehne (Germany), Meher Tatna, (India) and Ali Sar (Turkey) gave their points of view for exclusivity and becoming more diverse in the awards ceremonies for the future.
- Amanda Siegfried spoke about “Mank” which is the next film nominated this year as the trailer also played for all.
- Justin Theroux presented the actor for a Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie to Mark Ruffalo for “I Know This Much Is True” as he to accepted from home with his family by his side.
- Cynthia Erivo presented best screenplay for a motion picture to Aaron Sorkin for the “The Trial of the Chicago Seven” as he accepted virtually with his crew behind him.
- Poehler added a little comedy in a mock acceptance speech put on by Kenan Thompson and Maya Rudolph as she brought them up as Beverly Jackfruit and Francois Jean to accept “Least Original Song in a Telefilm, Dramedy or Comma”.
- Sarah Paulson gave a synopsis of another film nominated, “The Prom” as the trailer played after.
- Golden Globes Ambassadors Satchel and Jackson Lee (Spike Lee’s children) were announced as they spoke about Big Brothers/Sisters whom they work with.
- Norman Lear was honored with changing TV beginning in the seventies as he brought controversy to TV in ways that has caused the entertainment industry to grow in its acceptance. He is the 2021 recipient for the Carol Burnett Award which at 98 years old he humbly accepted.
- Selma Hayek gave a synopsis of the next film nominated, “Nomadland” as the trailer played for all.
- Kiera Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon promoted Feeding America before awarding best actress in a television series: drama to Emma Corrin for her role in “The Crown”. She also accepted virtually from home.
- Tracy Morgan presented the next award for best Original Song for a Motion Picture “Io Si” (Seen) in the movie “The Life I Had”. He also presented best original score to the film “Soul” as all accepted both awards virtually.
- Kate Hudson spoke about the next musical nominated this year, “Music” as the trailer played after.
- Sterling K Brown and Susan Kelechi presented best actor in musical or comedy, TV series to Jason Sudeikis for “Ted Lasso” as he accepted virtually from home. They also award best musical or comedy TV series to “Schitt’s Creek” as the director in Canada accepted the award on behalf of the cast.
- Core Co-Founder, Sean Penn accepted a 500-thousand-dollar donation from HFPA to aid in the fight against Covid-19.
- Ben Stiller awarded Best Actress in a motion picture musical or comedy to Rosamund Pike for “I Care A Lot”.
- Margot Robbie spoke about the next film nominated, “Promising Young Woman” as the trailer played after.
- Anthony Anderson also reminded of the charity, Feeding America before presenting the award for best actor in a Television series, drama to Josh O’Connor for The Crown’s second award.
- Gal Gadot awarded the next award for best motion picture, foreign language to “Minari” (United States) as the director with his daughter accepted this honor.
- Kenan Thompson presented the next award for best television series- drama to “The Crown”, making this the third win for the series as the director humbly accepted from home.
- Jane Fonda is the 2021 recipient of the Cecil B. Demille award as she humbly accepted in Hollywood as she thanked all the movies nominated this year as each one has touched her specifically this year.
- Ava DeVernay introduced Hamilton with a brief synopsis as the trailer followed.
- Jamie Lee Curtis presented best supporting actress in a motion picture to Jodie Foster for “The Mauritarian” and she humbly accepted with shock.
- Christopher Maloney presented best actress in a supporting role to Gillian Anderson for the “The Crown’s” fourth win.
- Denise Jones introduced the Trailer for Borat: Subsequent Movie film as she gave a brief synopsis.
- Rosie Perez presented the award for best actress in a limited series, anthology series or TV movie to Anya Taylor Joy for “The Queen’s Gambit”. She also presented the award for best limited series, anthology series or TV movie also to “The Queen’s Gambit” for its second win.
- Renee Zelwegger reminded of the charity Feeding America before announcing Chadwick Boseman for best actor in motion picture, drama for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. In a very emotional acceptance speech, his wife, Simone Ledward Boseman humbly accepted this honor on behalf of her husband who passed away last year.
- Bryce Dallas Howard presented best director for a motion picture to Chloe Zhao for Nomadland.
- Sandra Oh introduced Palm Springs with a short synopsis leading up to the trailer.
- Barb & Star presented best picture for musical or comedy to “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” as the director humbly accepted.
- Awkwafina presented best actor for a comedy or musical motion picture to Sasha Baron Cohen for “Barat Subsequent Moviefilm” for their third win.
- Joaquin Pheonix presented the award for best actress in a motion picture- drama to Andra Day for “The United States versus Billie Holiday”.
- Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones presented Best picture-Drama to “Nomadland” for its second win and as the final award of the night.
