“Ambulance” Review

Director Michael Bay is at it again, this time in Ambulance. The fast paced 2 hour 16 minute movie features Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Matteen II as two brothers on the run after a bank heist goes wrong. What ends up happening is an ambulance gets high jacked in an attempt to save the life of an injured cop and collect a hefty ransom in the process.

All in all, the chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Abdul is exceptional. Gyllenhaal in particular fits into the scene with perfection as he uses the same cunning mannerisms as he did in his previous film Nightcrawler where he went rouge as a reporter trying to uncover the truth in very unethical ways. In this new role, he hasn’t changed as he is still portraying that cunning brother who just is out to make a little dough at all costs.

Abdul as well captures that of a veteran and father just trying to do what he can to help his family survive. When things start to go south and he finds himself offering assistance to the EMT on board, we see that emotional struggle between doing what is right and what the family needs to survive.

The EMT hostage is played by Hobbs and Shaw’s Eiza Gonzalez who equally excels in the role as she is racing against time and safety to insure that both she and the wounded officer get out alive.

The film ultimately has a lot of high impact moments that one might say is a similarity to the Speed franchise that came out in the 90’s. Taking place on the fast streets of Los Angeles, there are a lot of notable areas that Angelenos would immediately recognize as well as of course the LAPD and CHP officers who are trying to stop the hostile situation from turning fatal.

Ambulance came out in theaters April 8th and is currently playing in one near you.
