"Bombshell" Review

Three women, all at different stages of their career and all with the same problem on their hands. That problem being one man, Roger Alies, the top leader of Fox News who is determined to use his power to take advantage of women all in the name of growing their career, but the question is are the women brave enough to stand up against the sexual harassment and take a chance of never working in the news industry again.

The leading actresses include Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie who play the female reporters caught up in the latest scandal and they all did exceptionally well in portraying women caught up in sexual harassment exploitations.

Nicole Kidman in particular, did a remarkable job as she both had to deal with that as well as the mockery from President Trump when she attempted to uncover the truth about how he treats women. The statement that she says when she is brought into the forefront of the news is what any journalist fears when digging into the truth behind such powerful political figures. That statement is “I don’t want to be in the news like that” as she is put through a mockery of being called a “bimbo” on Twitter.

Meanwhile, while this is playing out, Charlize Theron, who is on the verge of being let go of after facing a humiliating demotion to a timeframe that no one watches, all because she refuses to give Roger Alies what he wants. She sits back and watches what other women have to go through all the while knowing what she will do when her time comes to exit Fox news.

Finally, Margot Robbie as the fresh face of the news, elegantly exemplifies the shame and humiliation associated with wanting to grow her career in the most unethical ways. Her facial expressions show that she is embarrassed and the ending has people cheering for what she does next.

Additionally, the actor playing the scheming news mogul with a hidden agenda is John Lithgow and he likewise does an exceptional job of playing the man that we all want to hate from the first moment with Kidman when she is facing the mockery to the interaction with Robbie when he first has her turn around and expose herself to see if she is good enough.

Furthermore, the make up artists did a stellar job on all the actors particularly Lithgow and Theron, whom at first glance one can almost be fooled into wondering if it is in fact them. They had a way of really insinuating the features of Lithgow’s features to make him appear rather unattractive and yet one whom knows what he wants. Theron’s makeup however made her appear even more glamorous than she already is in a news ready manner.

The film, of course, based on true events though obviously names were changed to protect privacy, but it brought light to what all female journalists have to go through and the choices they may choose as it causes audiences to wonder how important is the job over what is right and what they may be asked to do. The question is do they have the right ethics to make the right choice?

Bombshell came out December 20, 2019 and is currently playing in a theater near you.
