“Cry Macho” Review

Clint Eastwood‘s still got it even in the romance department in his latest film, Cry Macho”. The film, filmed primarily in New Mexico, follows the story of a one time rodeo star/ horse trainer, who is on a mission. The mission is to bring his ex boss’ 13 year old son over the country border to Texas, but first he has to find him in Mexico. What’s more is once he finds him, now he is on the run as the boy’s abusive mother is determined to stop him.

Cry Macho is a thickly packed movie with surprises around every corner. The biggest being the unexpected romance that Eastwood strikes up with a widow who ultimately keeps them safe from the Mexican law. The question is is the romance enough to keep the washed out cowboy in Mexico or will he complete the mission of reuniting father and son after all.

Eastwood, ultimately does a fantastic job in this role as he interacts with new newbie/ Spanish TV actor Eduardo Minett. Similarly Minett shows an uncanny maturity as he goes from being a bad boy on the streets of Mexico to one that after being beaten by his mom and her boyfriend’s, in the end all he wants is to be free and accepted by someone even if it is his father.

Another big name in Country music, Dwight Yoakam plays the boy’s father and Eastwood’s former boss and equally does an exceptional job of being a father who just has every willingness to save his only son. Of course what he doesn’t tell Eastwood’s character is that there is an ulterior motive, but one will have to see the film to figure out what that is.

All in all, Cry Macho is your typical western right down to the horses and the music that will leave any true western lover, throughly satisfied with Eastwood’s latest film. It is by far much better than his last film, The Mule, which came out in 2018 and didn’t fare at all in the box office. This one though has a fighting chance and is highly recommended for any Eastwood and western fan.

Cry Macho came out in theaters September 17, 2021 and is currently playing in one near you.
