“The Color Purple” REVIEW

The 1985 adaptation based on Alice Walker’s novel, is making a musical comeback.

This time the film stars, “Orange Is the New Black’s” Danielle Brooks as Celie, in a role that she adequately excels at. That role of a black woman suffering from child abuse from her “father” which grows as she is forced into a loveless marriage and torn away from her sister, the only person who truly loves her. Now she is faced with a dilemma as she meets new and powerful woman figures in her life: does she stay submissive to the abusive husband or attempt to find freedom in the city she calls home?

The film also stars a long list of actors including Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Fantasia Barrino and Little Mermaid‘s Halle Berry; all of who like Brooks excel in the convicting story that the producers hold deep. Additionally, there is even a nod to one of the original actress (Whoopi Goldberg) where they have her interacting with young Celia whom she played in the 1985 film.

The Color Purple contains the same themes as the original, given that Steven Spielberg directed both films. Another actress from the original also joins as producer (Oprah Winfrey) which is clear as to why it is so close to the original.

That being said, there is one clear difference that is more evident in the latest adaptation; that is the frequent talk of God and religion. In the new film, the story shows more clearly why Celie is so submissive as she draws lines back to faith and her belief that God will take care of her and her children. Additionally because of the musical aspect, one could say this further enhances connections and storyline, more so that as you are listening you are understanding how deep Celia’s faith truly is.

All in all, the 2023 version of The Color Purple is already making a big scene with 5 wins and 59 nominations including Best supporting actress for Fantasia Barrino and Best Actress for Danielle Brooks at the Golden Globes. As the awards season kicks into gear next month, it’s certain the film to be on the look out for. The Color Purple came out in theaters Christmas Day and is currently playing in a theater near you.
