“Till” Movie Review

One of the most powerful stories from the 1950’s which catapulted the civil rights act in a big way is now a powerful movie. Till is the story of the iconic Mamie who tragically lost her son when he was bludgeoned to death while visiting cousins in Mississippi. Through the tragic arose a change that made history 63 years with the passing of the antilynching law. The movie powerfully displays how racial hatred can destroy lives and cause dishevel in communities.

Television actress Danielle Deadwyler captures the emotions of Mamie Till-Mobley in a way that captivates audiences and causes them to feel every ounce of emotion including the stunning moment when she sees with her own eyes the destruction that was done to her only son. The decision by the filmmakers to show that on screen also adds to the drama and emotion that the real life Mamie went through back in 1955.

Actress Whoopi Goldberg who produces as well as starred as Alma Carthan, mother and Grandmother of Mamie and her son, Emmett (Bo) Till ( Jalyn Hall) also adds to the emotion as a grandmother who must watch as her beloved daughter makes the willful choice to return to Mississippi to avenge her son’s death. All in all, the casting couldn’t me more perfect for such an emotional story.

Till which came out in limited theaters October 14 definitely captures what we are still facing in 2022, that of racial discrimination as it shows that even though we have gotten better, we are still far from clear of being a world where everyone fully accepts one another. That being said, one hopes in watching this powerful movie, one might find it in theirselves to be better and not repeat the tragic history of the past.
