“Are You There God, it’s me, Margaret?” REVIEW

The beloved book from the 70’s is now a motion picture as Judy Blume‘s Are You There God, it’s me, Margaret? debuts April, 28, 2023. The film tells the all to familiar story of a young girl’s emotions as she faces common things including moving from the city to the suburbs as well as other common things young girls question at that age.

Starring newcomer Abby Ryder Fortson, who does an exceptional job considering this is her debut feature length film. She truly captures the emotional ties that a young girl has as she navigates sixth grade. Additionally, Doctor Strange‘s Rachel McAdams is thoughtfully cast as her mother, a woman who now must adjust to life as a homemaker after years of working as an art teacher. It’s ultimately a new role for McAdams that she seems to slide right into with such ease and charm.

Furthermore, the film also touches on the question of religion from the eyes of a young girl growing up with out either until ready. The film does a good job of subtly interesting such religions as Judaism, gospel, christian and even Catholicism and shows what happens when pushed too hard by either side. In the end, it brings Margaret back to the idea that there is a God, without making an ultimate decision of a specific religion.

The film is currently playing in a theater near you and is the perfect movie for anyone who is a Judy Blume fan or anyone with a young girl questioning her body features.
