“Dune” Reimagined Review

“Dreams are messages from the Deep”.

This quote sets up what is two and a half hours of action fueled by one man’s dreams. It’s those dreams that lead him to his ultimate destiny as he discovers everything he knew once about the emperor his family served is not exactly right. When those who his family follows sets them up for death by going into the desert to see the all important spice mines, he realizes that he has an alternate destiny, different from his father who tragically dies in the desert. The question is will he and his mother find refuge with those Arrakis Freman whom society was at war with over the spice.

The film stars Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides, the young man trying to follow in his father’s footsteps, while being haunted by an ongoing dream with the image of one of the freman women, Chani (Zendaya). Ultimately compared to other films that Chalamet has been in, Dune is a step up into the sci fi world as we see an even more in depth role that one might say resembled an Anakin as he tries to grasp a leadership role in both the empire and later with the Fremans. Similarly Zendaya steps away from her teenage, Disney roles as a female hero figure in the making.

Rebecca Ferguson stars as the mother (LadyJessica Atreides) which is also a slightly different character than she is known for. She has that warm motherly vibe twisted with strong warrior as she and Chalamet face their friends turned foe in the battle to the death and then again when they must prove themselves worthy to be in the freman clan. One star who fit in just fine was Star Wars’ Oscar Isaac who took on he role as Duke Leto Atreides (Chalamet’s father) and he fit in just right from working on the emperor’s side to fighting for his life when the empire turned against him and his son for fear of the unknown.

All in all, the newest Dune, paid an incredible homage to the original, while inviting new spectators to find pleasure and excitement in the stunning fight scenes, awesome CGI and phenomenal soundtrack but none other than Hans Zimmer. It’s definitely a movie for this century that will have you routing for Paul Atreides and his family as he finds out the truth and seeks to stop those that he once trusted.
