“Stillwater” Review

It’s a heartfelt film about the determination a father has to help his daughter when she is in prison for a crime that she claims she didn’t commit.

Focus Features’ Stillwater stars Matt Damon in on of his most emotional films yet as it is also a film about second chances both with his current daughter as well as with a new little girl whom he meets while in France as he instantly takes on a father like figure to help out her overworked single mother. In doing so, there is a somewhat of a romance brewing between, Bill (Damon) and Virginie (Camille Cottin) especially after he is told not to interfer anymore by his daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin) after trying to find the man who supposedly set her up. But when he runs into that man once again while taking the little girl to a sports event, he takes matters into his own hands, going so far as to lock him up in a basement until proof can be made that he in fact is the person responsible for the death of a French girl. The question is how far is his willing to go to help his daughter and still keep the relationship with this new family that he has fallen for?

At 2 hour 19 minute runtime, Stillwater is a film that will have you in suspense from the first moment with Bill given the special task of giving a letter to the defense attorney. From the moment he realized through translation of his daughters innocence, it is a race through time to find and convict the right man in order to free his daughter. The ending will have you surprised and wondering what will happen next as with most Focus Feature Films, it leaves it open ended for the viewer to wonder and anticipate.

That being said, Stillwater came out in theaters July 30th and is a suspense film that is totally worth seeing especially on the big screen. It’s currently playing in a theater near you.
