“Where the Crawdads Sing” REVIEW

Kya is determined to stay at her home in the dangerous marsh even if it means being by herself to do it. It’s a battle of survival from one extreme to the other. When she is suspected of killing a boy whom she was previously involved with romantically, it’s time for this shy young girl to tell the truth for better or worse. The question is what truth do people really want to hear and is it enough to set her free?

Based on the worldwide phenomenon by Delia Owens, “Where the Crawdads Sing” is the movie of the summer that has you rooting for the small town girl against the world. The stellar cast includes a list of relative newbies including Daisy Edgar- Jones who takes on the shy girl (Kya) who inevitably is just trying to find peace and acceptance in a world of hatred and ridicule. All in all Jones does an exceptional job of fully embracing that as she goes from shy timid young girl to one with the boldness to stand up against her enemy whom she once loved and trusted.

Set in the openness of North Carolina, the film does capture the beauty of nature as seen through the eyes of the hatred that is in the world. The beauty along with a gorgeous soundtrack fully captivates audiences especially listening to Taylor Swift’s song, Carolina which was especially written for the powerful movie.

At 2 hours and 5 minutes run time, “Where the Crawdads Sing” will have audiences truly invested from the first moment to Kya’s final moment of peace as one truly understands the safety that comes from where the Crawdads sing. The film came out in theaters July 15, 2022 and is currently playing in a theater near you.
