“Venom 2” Review

Venom meets his match when his “spawn” emerges in serial killer, Cletus Kasady as Carnage. Now it’s up to his host, Eddie Brock to stop arch-nemesis Cletus in what seems to be a battle to the death. The similarity that both Eddie and Cletus have in common is they both have loves that they are separated from. It is that love that Carnage feeds on and uses their partners as bait to get Venom to come out.

Ultimately the second Venom: Let There Be Carnage certainly outdoes the first especially in the comedy field. Tom Hardy knows how to carry his inner monologue to the next level which leaves the audience laughing nearly every second of the movie. Hardy has a knack of going from calm guy to monster within and even when Venom and Eddie dish it out like normal brothers, he has a way of making you really believe there is a monster living inside the man.

Additionally Woody Harrelson as Cletus and Carnage equally does an exceptional job doing the same inner monologue, with an added element. That is knowing how to make the audience hate and love you at the same time. From the first time we see Cletus, we know he is not up to any good, however the love story between himself and childhood sweetheart, Frances/ Shriek, is enough to cause you sympathy and compassion when Carnage threatens both hers and Eddie’s girl, Anne’s life.

Lastly the two women who play the love interests do an exceptional job in their own ways. 007‘s Naomie Harris plays Shriek and coming from that franchise, she uses the same cunning deception to get exactly what she wants. Similarly Anne is played by Greatest Showman star, Michelle Williams and her mannerisms tell it all. Williams has a way of also cunningly hiding what she truly feels and by the end, one would wonder is she truly willing to give Eddie up or will we see her again in future films.

Speaking of future films, the end credit scene does give a hint that our Venomous character might be making a Spidery appearance very soon. Of course that is only speculation as one will only wait til December when the next Spiderman hits theater.

That being said, one could say the sequel is pleasantly more entertaining than the originals. With a few surprises, it will leave audiences certainly wanting more.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage came out in theaters October 1st and is currently playing in one near you.
